Our next film, on Tuesday 19 November at 19:45 is a departure from our usual programming. The first in our CFS Extra films, three older pictures designed to illustrate a theme, Ninotchka is an early romantic comedy, released in 1939 and starring Greta Garbo and Melvyn Douglas.

The theme this year is called Red Alert! It consists of three comedies dealing with the rivalry between the US and Soviet Russia. In Ninotchka, a dedicated commissar (Garbo) is despatched to Paris to sort out some backsliding comrades who have been sent there on a mission. When she arrives, she meets a charming man (Douglas) and her ideological commitment is tested.

Directed by Ernst Lubitsch, with a script by Billy Wilder, Ninotchka is a charming film that deserves to be seen.
